Family Office & Trustee Services
Legal counsel and fiduciary partner to family offices and the principals behind them. We hold trustee appointments, administer estates, design the entities that hold family assets, and keep the structure coordinated with the tax, investment, and accounting advisors already at the table.
Scope
Five parts of one structure.
Trustee Services
Trustee Appointments · Fiduciary Administration · Successor TrusteeServing as trustee is a job of judgment, not paperwork. Through Lake Advisors, the firm's affiliated advisory practice, Ryan Lake serves as a fiduciary: administering trusts, exercising discretion over distributions, keeping records that hold up under scrutiny, and communicating with beneficiaries in a way that lowers the temperature rather than raising it. Where a family needs an independent trustee, or where asking one family member to serve alone has become untenable, that role can sit with us.
Estate Administration
Trust Settlement · Asset Transfer · Beneficiary TransitionsWhen a principal dies, a structure that took decades to build meets its first real test. We carry the estate through settlement: identifying and marshalling assets, satisfying obligations, coordinating valuations and tax filings with your accountants, and moving property to the people and entities meant to receive it. The aim is a clean transition that does not become a dispute.
Family Governance
Family Agreements · Decision Rights · Next-Generation PlanningGovernance is how a family decides. Who holds a vote, what requires consent, how information reaches the people it affects, and what happens when the generation that built the wealth is no longer the generation running it. We put those answers in writing while relationships are good, because that is the only time they can be written well.
Entity Design
Holding Companies · LLCs · Trust-Owned EntitiesFamilies rarely hold everything in one place. An operating business, real property, private investments, and personal assets each want a different container, and the containers have to work with one another. We draw the ownership map, form the entities, write the operating agreements that govern them, and keep the structure current as the picture changes.
Advisor Coordination
Tax · Investment · Accounting · InsuranceMost families we work with already have advisors they trust. We do not replace them. We sit alongside the tax, investment, and accounting teams as the counsel carrying the full legal context, so that a decision made in one seat is not quietly undone in another.
A structure is only as good as the judgment behind it, and judgment takes years of context.
Approach
One counsel who carries the whole picture.
Family office work fails in the seams. The trust says one thing and the operating agreement says another, the insurance was written for a structure that changed four years ago, and no one owns the job of noticing. We take that job. Lake Legal was built to hold the full context of a family's affairs over years, not to advise on a document and hand it back.
That is only possible at a deliberate scale, which is why the firm stays selective. We take on a limited number of relationships and stay with them, because the counsel who structured the holding company should be the one advising on the succession that runs through it. Context of that kind cannot be reconstructed at the moment it is needed.
Because Ryan Lake also serves as a fiduciary through Lake Advisors, legal structure and family strategy stay under one roof. When a trustee decision and a legal question turn out to be the same question, it does not have to travel between two firms to get answered.
Who This Serves
Families at the point where structure matters.
Families in Transition
A death, a sale, or a generational handoff turns a structure that worked into one that needs rebuilding. These are the moments when the documents get read closely for the first time, and when the gaps between them become expensive.
Principals With Sprawl
Wealth that reaches across operating companies, property, and private investments accumulates entities faster than anyone maintains them. We map what exists, retire what no longer earns its keep, and make the remainder coherent.
Trusts Needing Independence
Where naming a family member as trustee would strain the relationship it is meant to protect, an independent fiduciary who already knows the family and the structure is the steadier answer.
Questions
What families ask first.
What does a family office attorney do that our current lawyer does not?
Most lawyers are engaged for a matter: a document, a transaction, a dispute. Family office counsel is engaged for a structure. The work is continuous rather than episodic, and it spans the trusts, the entities, the governance, and the succession as one connected system rather than as separate files.
Can Lake Legal serve as our trustee?
Yes. Ryan Lake serves as a fiduciary through Lake Advisors, the firm's affiliated advisory practice. That keeps trustee service and legal counsel under one roof, whether the appointment is as an original trustee, a successor trustee, or an independent trustee serving alongside family members.
Will you replace our tax and investment advisors?
No. Most families we work with already have advisors they trust, and those relationships usually predate ours. Our role is to coordinate with them and to carry the legal context across the whole structure, not to compete for a seat that is already filled.
What is family governance in practical terms?
It is the written answer to questions families otherwise settle by argument: who decides, what requires consent, how information reaches the people affected by it, and how the next generation earns a role. In practice it can take the form of a family agreement, a board or committee structure, decision rights written into an operating agreement, or all three.
Where is Lake Legal licensed to practice?
Ryan Lake is licensed to practice in Colorado and the firm is based in Denver. Family structures often reach other states through property, entities, or beneficiaries, and a matter that turns on another jurisdiction's law is handled together with counsel admitted there.
How selective is the practice?
Deliberately selective. Lake Legal takes on a limited number of long-term relationships rather than a high volume of matters. Family office work depends on context that only accumulates over years, and that context cannot be held across a large book of clients.
